Hope blooms year-round for Halifax inner-city kids
Kids living in an inner-city neighbourhood in Halifax got more than they bargained for when military and civilian staff from the Department of National Defence (DND) showed up for a Day of Caring project. The staff got to work and built a greenhouse for the kids, who grow herbs in a community garden. From those herbs they prepare and sell salad dressings — called Hope Blooms — which previously could only be sold in the summer. Now, thanks to DND’s volunteer work, children and youth between the ages of five and 15 who participate in the project can now grow herbs and make dressings year-round. All profits from the sales of the dressings are invested in an education fund for the kids. Hope truly does bloom in Halifax.
